Is it pathetic if you can't speak your native language?
« on: August 16, 2004, 07:37:09 PM »
Some people really look down on this. Like if you're Korean, and you stroll about Koreatown but can't converse in Korean, I've heard some people really dogging people like this.

Frankly, I don't really give a *&^%, cause there could be many circumstances involved with someone not being able to speak their mother tongue.

Anybody feel differently?

I don't think its a really big deal, I mean its always a plus to know your native language, but there's no need to give anyone *&^% about it.

I think it's pretty bad if you can't converse in your native language. This would mean though that you had to have been born in overseas and can't carry a simple conversation. I don't think it's bad if you were born here. Nor do I think it's bad if you can converse but just can't sit down and write a novel.

i think it depends.  if you spoke korean for the first two years of your life, for example, and then never spoke another word since because you moved to the u.s., that is fine.  there are many people who understand their native language but only speak it at a basic level, or none at all.

Yeah, its bad.  If you can't speak the language, who will teach the rest of us all the curse words?  ???

Just kidding, I don't think it matters, but I bet your relatives are upset.
