I got offered a Scholars in Law award for 24k/yr (72k) - a pretty nice surprise to cap off a bad week.

Got the letter a couple of nights ago - $30k.  Definitely nice, but not enough.

How do they calculate these things?

I think they have a formula where they just plug in your UGPA and your LSAT score.  Do "splitters" do not fare too well.

It looks like 3.9, 165= 10k/yr, 3.92, 166= 20k/yr.

Wow, who'd a thunk that a point on the LSAT would be worth that much more?  I'd like to think it's also GPA/major?  Either way, I'll live... :)

i doubt there's a strict formula for any school.  if you look at the offers made by notre dame and uiuc (i only know these since i got money from them), you'll see that people with similar numbers got very different offers in some cases

This doesn't surprise me at all.  All WUSTL cares about is LSAT.  My 3.9/163 doesn't give me jack there (despite my work experience, master's degree, etc.) but if I had two more points on the LSAT, I would have gotten at least 10K.  I talked to the school about the possiblity of getting at least some scholarship (even 2 or 3K would have been better than nothing) but they said I do not qualify because my LSAT is not the average. (Of course 70% of the studends get scholarships so I don't know how they explain that but I didn't press them; the other 20% probably are URM's)

And their tuition is steep; $35K a year for 2005-06 according to the admitted students binder.  And it goes up 2 or 3K a year. Tuition will likely push 40K for the second and third year.

The Total cost of 3 year attendance can be broken down as follows assuming 2K and 3K hikes in tuition for the second and third years respectively:

Tuition (35K + 37K + 40K): 112K
Books (2K x 3): 6K
Living: (15K x 3): 45K
Total: 163K

So even those of you who are getting great scholarships at 60K or 70K, you are still looking at some fairly major debt.  I would say go the better school if I were you.

I have a 169 score, but got only 8K year because of a 3.1 GPA.

I think WU is probably not worth going into that much debt.  I will try to "bargain" by showing them better offers from other places.

I don't think this is necessarily true. It is going to take a lot longer than 3 years for tuitions to reach the 40k mark. Not to mention the fact that WUSTL can't afford to become the most expensive law school if they are set on improving their ranking any more. I think it'll stay around 35k for our 3 year tenure, which is not cheap by any means and still leaves even us 60k scholarship people with sizeable debt.

I got mine on Saturday, $30/k over 3 years. Nice, but I'm not considering attending.
