Job Search / Re: How's the job search going?
« on: October 21, 2008, 05:31:55 AM »
Are people at your school slightly unnerved by that whole offer rescinded thing or has ATL blown it out of proportion?

I haven't noticed anyone being freaked out about it, or even talking about it.  But it did put even more pressure on me to make up my mind, which I did over the weekend.

The other thing would be that in this economy, if you figure the more prestigious firms will continue to succeed where some of the less prestigious firms will suffer.

Incoming 1Ls / Re: Enjoying 1L. Am I Doing Something Wrong?

I loved 1L and people on this board thought I was nuts.  Fall of 2L is actually the really stressful, pain in the tail semester.

I second this one.  I'm looking forward to 3L. I'm overcommitted to extracurriculars this year, on top of the job search (which I'm now done with-- woot).

Current Law Students / Re: lack of motivation in 2L

I don't think lack of motivation to do your class reading or journal assignment translates to being generally bored with life or even with your career in law.  Especially not when you've just gone through an exhausting month or two of interviews and traveling.

Is Chicago's scale like basically the LSAT scale?

I feel it.  I think I'm P/Fing half my courseload this semester.

Job Search / Re: how do SMU students fare in the Austin market?
« on: October 17, 2008, 07:53:22 AM »
Just FYI, as a Michigan student with strong enough credentials to get an offer at a top DC firm, I couldn't get an offer at any Austin firm.  Only one callback in Austin.

But take that for what it's worth... I have no Texas ties, and an SMU student clearly does.  But UT seems very dominant there.

P.S.-- I not only interviewed with every firm with an Austin office that came to OCI, but I did a mailing to Austin firms over the summer. Not a single response.

You're incorrigible  :D

Among other things.  ;)

But.  But.  Don't firms generally prefer T10 because they can brag about the associates they have from T10 schools?  You're assuming that firms are rational about name recognition (Yale to GULC), which they obviously aren't in some respects.  It's better to have Michigan JD on the firm's website over UCLA, but I doubt the quality of associate changes that much.

So I don't get this post.  At all.  I don't think firms give a damn about name recognition.  Not top firms, anyway.  Why do you think I assume that?

We are in the midst of a FINANCIAL crisis.

NOT an ECONOMIC crisis.

Um, have you seen the manufacturing report that came out today?

I think firms absolutely do care about name recognition, especially after talking to a transfer who went through OCI at his old T1 school and then at Michigan two weeks later.

The other thing is that there's no place to say which office... that makes a huge difference.

I feel like the first half of recruiting season was easier, and the second half has slowed down.  I am wishing I had scheduled a couple of my later callbacks earlier, and vice versa.

But overall, nothing to complain about.
