JKR is such a tease.

For some reason, I picture you saying that with authority and the shadow of a wink in your eye. Hott.

About the God thing - this article in Time was interesting - basically talking about how if you look at other children's classics (LOTR, Narnia), religious themes are much less present in Harry Potter, which is a reflection of the times or whatever. Instead of religion or spirituality, Harry has love to guide him. I don't agree with the author of this column that there is no spirituality or religious symbolism in Harry Potter or the magical world that JK Rowling created. I still thought it was interesting:

Quote
What does Harry have instead of God? Rowling's answer, at once glib and profound, is that Harry's power comes from love. This charming notion represents a cultural sea change. In the new millennium, magic comes not from God or nature or anything grander or more mystical than a mere human emotion. In choosing Rowling as the reigning dreamer of our era, we have chosen a writer who dreams of a secular, bureaucratized, all-too-human sorcery, in which psychology and technology have superseded the sacred.

I feel like people would know better than to read this thread if they weren't done with the book, right?

I'll start -- I liked the book a lot, but really disliked the epilogue.  I had a lot of lingering questions, and it answered pretty much none of them.  I'd much rather have found out what happened with the elves/goblins/giants, or who raised baby Lupin, or what George ended up doing.

i definitely agree with this---i wanted to know if Teddy went to live with Harry straight away, how did George live on w/o his twin and what happened to their business...I knew that Neville would become a Hogwarts prof as soon as JKR said that one of the would be.  I wish they would have mentioned Luna & Aberforthin the epilouge too.

and who didn't know that Snapy was good and in love with Lily?  i saw that one coming, but it was handled quite nicely.  all in all, i loved the book, but so saddened by the murders--and Hedwig hit me hard.

Hedwig was the worst for me.  It was the only death I never even thought about happening.  As devastating as it was, though, I thought it was kind of a good sign that this book wasn't f***ing around.

Also, I think it's a bit creepy that Harry's kids are named James and Lily Potter.  I would've gone with middle names, personally -- let the kids have their own names and not some crazy legacy to live up to.

And the more that I think about it, it was never a question that H/G and R/H would end up together.  But what are they doing with their lives?  I really want to know what happened to the world of the books.  I'd really be happy with another book about the characters, even if there's no way the plot could be as high-stakes as they have been.

100% agree with you on the bolded.  i was just about to come back and edit my post to wonder if Harry really became and Auror and wonder what Hermione did with all of her brains.

i'm hoping we will find out all of this in the encyclopedia

and hedwig...honestly...once they kept talking about her in the beginning, i figured she was a goner...but i wasn't 100% sure and i was like wtf when Hedwig got blasted.

I just finished a little while ago - I had ordered it from Amazon but couldn't wait so this morning at 8:00 I went to B. Dalton and bought it.

I really liked it too! I had to go get my box of tissues around the time that Harry was seeing Snape's memories. I thought the epilogue was LAME but whatever, overall I am really satisfied.

I don't think there were gratuitous deaths - it was the last book, I was expecting a lot of death, and frankly if there had only been like 1 or 2 I would have felt like it had been dumbed down or something.

I like that after reading this book you dislike/hate very few characters - it was so cute when Dudley felt bad about leaving Harry, and it was touching how Kreacher came around to be really loyal to Harry and I loved the part when the house elves (who I have always been really annoyed by) kicked some ass. Actually, the first time I shed a tear while reading was when Harry was picturing Kreacher faithfully making them a big meal and waiting patiently for their return, and then how disappointed/wrecked he must have been when they never came back... :(

And of course Snape - I was SO hoping the whole Snape issue would get resolved with him as a good guy. That was one of my favorite parts of the book - when you get to see how the plan really unfolded, and even though I didn't like the epilogue, I liked the part where the son's middle name was Severus and Harry told him that Severus was the bravest person he ever knew or whatever.

Anyway, all in all it kicked ass!

Now what?   :(

Hey guys, I'm peacin out until I finish the book - I am scared some jackass is going to read the spoilers and post them somewhere where I will accidentally read them. No internet until next week!!

Happy reading!  Make sure to post your thoughts when you're done (maybe with a big spoilers heading though, lol).

Thanks and same to you!
