General Off-Topic Board / ITT we discuss plagarism
« on: April 09, 2007, 12:01:01 AM »
Red. brought up an interesting topic in plagiarism, accusing Thomas Jefferson and others of as much. ITT we'll be discussing plagiarism, and specific questions could include:

1. What is plagiarism now, and what was it in the past?

2. How is plagiarism different across disciplines and why is it taken much more seriously in written work?

3. How useful is plagiarism as a charge and does this change when it's compared with copyright?

4. What exactly are we trying to foster and forbid with our current notions of plagiarism, and what are the consequences of those notions?

5. After viewing the first link, which is a discussion between Richard Posner, Jonathan Lethem, and Francoise Meltzer on their works concerning plagiarism, who, if anyone, do you find to be persuasive?

So I just heard from a friend that there's an email going around GULC explaining that the school has refused to allow the Equal Justice Foundation to sponsor a pro-choice internship.  Can I get some verification of this?  I'm sure that there are students addressing this now and would like to hear what's going on.

General Off-Topic Board / Why the hell have I been banned?
« on: January 26, 2007, 02:04:50 PM »
So I'm writing this from a new proxy server because for some unknown reason I've been banned from accessing this site.  There was no warning, just all of the sudden last night I had all access cut off, even when I signed out.  I can't imagine why this happened and I would like to see Groundhog or Sands try to explain this.  The only reasonable answer would be that somehow using Tor triggered something, but I really haven't been up to anything nor was there any warning.

The perfectly unreasonable answer is if Brave somehow decided to take me out for bringing up the UT party again.  Back in October he sent me a nasty email about the thing and I know that some on this board are touchy about the subject.  Feel free to check out what I wrote and tell me for yourself if you think it merits bannination.  For those who care, feel free to ask him, or Archival for some perspective.  I sincerely hope this isn't the case but I can't possibly think of any other reason other than technical incompetence.

So yeah, way to go LSD admins.  You won't have Spaulding to push you around any more.  Wait, that's not how that's supposed to go.  Either way, I'm out for good absent a full apology.

Every now and then I joke that I have a hard time respecting a handful of my classmates, but I can't imagine being a part of a law school with these people.  This was a party for MLK day and not only were they brilliant enough to think that this was a good idea, they thought that this it would be an even better idea to have cameras there and post the pictures online.  These aren't candid shots taken by an undercover reporter out to show how idiotic these people are.  They are broadcasting this to the world.  These pictures break my heart in many ways and to think that they were drinking good beer (that's a bottle of Rogue Santa's Private Reserve) is just rubbing salt in the wounds.  I kid, because how the @#!* else are you going to accept that someone somewhere thinks that this passes for adequate behavior from adults.

So UT, you're off the hook when it comes to harboring* some of the absolute stupidest students.  We've known that for many years there's been no county here, but to think that this is the future of whatever is left is going to be hard to accept.

*I plan on asking at least one firm if they have hired anyone who was present at that party at an upcoming interview for various reasons.  I still haven't seen a list of names of attendees posted here...for various reasons.

General Off-Topic Board / NYU making another major faculty aquisition?
« on: September 26, 2006, 10:33:21 AM »
So if James Whitman does go to NYU and Sunstein/Nussbaum finally move to Harvard, I think it's about time to start arguing that NYU is the third best school in the country ahead of Chicago and Stanford.   After raiding Columbia, it just seems like NYU is the school where everyone wants to be these days.  Also, I've heard that Yale might be hemorrhaging faculty soon, which I can't understand for the life of me after they picked up Jolls and Gerken.
