Incoming 1Ls / What's your plan if you don't do well your first year?
« on: September 23, 2009, 10:14:58 AM »
Before law school, I thought I would be kicking butt at it.  But I essentially got straight Bs my first semester, and one C my second.  That put me at about the 50th percentile.

Boy, I was totally unprepared for that reality. Luckily, I had planned to do public interest work anyway, but if my heart was set on a six-figure salary, I would have been royally SCREWED.

I decided to stick it out and my grades steadily improved, but I was lucky.

What will you do if you are in the bottom half of the class after your first year of law school?

It's a good idea to think about this now, before it actually happens to you!

In case you all have had your heads in the sand, this is a terrible time to be thinking about law school, unless your parents are paying for it or you have a full scholarship.  The job market is terrible, and will continue to be for several years with the near collapse of the BIGLAW hiring model.  And since most people don't practice in BIGLAW, I thought you would all like to take a look at this article that sums up salary distributions among law grads

Essentially, you will probably take on $100K in debt, and earn between $40,000 and $65,000 per year following graduation.  (If you can even find a job)

With all this being the case, why are so many people still lining up to go to law school?

Incoming 1Ls / Need a description of OCI process
« on: January 05, 2008, 07:37:18 PM »
I need a good source with general information about what OCI is like at most schools.  (Not a Wikipedia article)

Does anyone have a good internet source that I could cite for a journal article?

Thanks in advance for your help!

For those who are worried that you won't be able to repay your student loans unless you take a high paying Biglaw job, the College Cost Reduction and Access Act will save you (kind of)

Passed this fall, the CCRAA provides that you can use an Income Based Repayment scheme to repay your federal loans (Stafford, GradPlus) at only 15% of your discretionary income over the poverty level.  It also provides loan forgiveness for public interest lawyers after 10 years.

For an IBR (Income Based Repayment) calculatory, go to

Incoming 1Ls / Do you have a mentor?
« on: May 10, 2006, 11:11:48 AM »
I never thought about this before, until someone at worked asked whether Victoria (an attorney who has a similar personality to mine who went to my school and has been practicing for years) was my mentor.  We meet for lunch every other week to talk about law-related stuff, and she provides me with a lot of encouragement and resources that have been helpful.  I guess she is my mentor.

I am just wondering if anyone else has someone like this that they go to for advice.

My SO just told me that there is NO WAY we can go on our music cruise this winter.  (Jan 2-7)  Last year, I paid for half of his, and he still hasn't paid me back for all of it. The year before, I won my passage on the ship, and he paid for himself.   :-[ :-\ :'(

He was supposed to ask for a raise at work, but chickened out about it b/c he thought they would say no.

Honestly, I have some stuff I can sell (artwork) to be able to afford to do this.  He has a ton of Star Wars crap (like every action figure ever made still in the package).

I really want to ask him to sell that stupid *&^% so we can take the only vacation I will be going on for a year. I know I sound like a bi&*h, but I was really looking forward to this.  Why didn't I fall in love with a rich man????? >:( >:(
