Job Search / Hunting down the smaller firms in your region
« on: July 04, 2008, 05:51:26 PM »
After my big law research has put me into a state of utter hopelessness, from looking all day at bios that outclass my own, I have started trying to hunt down some local firms with interesting practice areas.

Is Martindale the best resource for this?

While I'm at it - I understand that the hiring schedule for these firms can be quite different than that of larger firms. Is it most reasonable to simply send a letter of interest at the earliest possible time?

Current Law Students / licensure for summer associates
« on: July 01, 2008, 02:44:57 PM »
Do summer associates tend to need an intermediate sort of license, the type you would need to do a clinical course in your law school?

If so, do the employers expect you to have all your bar admission materials submitted already and have character and fitness approval before they make the offer?

Current Law Students / Planning for the 2L hiring season
« on: June 25, 2008, 08:43:30 PM »
Hi folks,
I understand the hiring season for 2L summer work is pretty much the start of this fall.  I am worried what to do if I don't get any associateship offers. What type of fallback plan should a student make?  It seems almost like applying to law school again - you might apply to a few reaches, and then some standbys.  The thing is, I don't want to apply to some backup job that I don't even want.  That seems dishonest - and neither do I want to work for $10 per hour when I have a reasonable shot at high-paying firm positions.
How does one approach the fall semester hiring season?
And subsequently, supposing 2L summer did not go so well, how would a 3L go about seeking work without good 2L summer work experience to mention?

(personally, i am in the top ten of a regional school).

Just throwing this out there... Anybody got their finger on the pulse of the IP law scene?  I want to write on a rewarding topic, and I've got until the fall to decide.  Suggestions? ??? This is a law review assignment for the fall. I thought I would ask here before I started doing possibly misdirected research.

Choosing the Right Law School / How unfair is this?
« on: March 26, 2007, 01:04:04 PM »
A school awards me a scholarship, based on my LSAT, in the amount of last year's tuition, (precisely $8,880).  They require a seat deposit of $200 by April 2.  But, as yet, next year's student budget is not released, and they intend to vote on a tuition/fees increase of as much as $1500 per year on April 22nd.  Twenty days after they require the seat deposit!  I would expect about twenty days of my own to decide, not the other way around!

Now fifteen hundred is a small amount, in law school terms. But considering the percentage increase, it is significant.  This is obviously not the most expensive law school in the country.

I asked an admissions officer if the scholarships would adjust upward, but the answer was: "not in the past."  I am considering writing a polite request to the dean, but surely he is aware of the situation already.

What do you think, is this not a bait-and-switch move?  Should I bother with a letter?  ???

Law School Admissions / how long until you must confirm attendance

If I apply this late in a cycle, with March 1 as the final deadline, how soon will the school be likely to require a seat deposit?

Personal Statements, Resumes, and Letters of Recommendation / Proper Nouns

I have a little trouble determining whether I should capitalize something such as a college course subject.  Say Law and Economics.  If I were talking about a specific class, it would be capitalized, but if I am just talking about the subject in general, can it be lower-case? Does mathematics mean the same thing as Mathematics? ???

General Off-Topic Board / How much is too much of Law and Order?

There are times when I can't wait to see the next rerun... And other times when I can't watch without cringing at the acting.

General Off-Topic Board / New Forum For Teachers
« on: February 05, 2007, 06:02:27 PM »
I'm trying to start a phpBB-powered web forum for teachers to discuss their work.  Most of the online materials for teachers seems pretty fragmented and full of junk. forums are a nice try but their forum software just doesn't cut it. Ironically, it seems like overseas ESL teachers have the best online forum in

If anyone is interested in helping out, stop by and see if you can contribute a post or two.  It's getting kind of lonely, just talking to myself  ;)
