Job Search / Rankings, cutoffs, and questions!
« on: June 05, 2008, 05:14:50 PM »
Hey,

Please let me know if I should be panicking.

After the fall semester, I was probably around the top third, but this semester I made a bad grade in crim (I ran out of time), and I am now probably right at the median. I have NO interest in practicing crim, so it sucks that this grade was the kicker that brought down my GPA from a 3.420 to a 3.280 :( I did not get a C, (I got a B-) but it is my worst grade. I am not sure what the median is at my school (it is a top 20 program), since we don't rank. The top 20% cut if usually around 3.5.

I really hate that I missed that 3.3 cutoff. Should I still apply to firms that have a 3.3 cutoff? Or what about firms that ask for top half? I have no clue how to do the math to calculate the median at the school, although I think it is a 3.2-something.

I won't know if I made a journal until July. Ideally, I would like to practice in Austin, Dallas, or Houston. (and no, I do not go to UTx)

What do you older and wiser law students think?

BTW: I am employed as a summer associate for 8 weeks at a pretty large firm.

General Off-Topic Board / Costco and Sam's Club

Hey----

I stupidly posted this in another thread. It was an accident! I meant to be over here the whole time. Anyway. Not that anyone cares....sigh.

Do any of you have memberships to these places?HuhHuh? There is a Sam's near my future law school, and I wonder if it would be worth joining. Do you really save money?! I am just worried about money today. I don't live alone, so the cost would be split, and I would eat all that peanut butter alone.

Sometimes I think it might be worth it for things we eat a lot like chicken, peanut butter, cokes...toilet paper.

Anyway. Thoughts would be appreciated.

Choosing the Right Law School / Seat Deposit: Cashing the Checks
« on: April 05, 2007, 08:57:14 PM »
Hey guys,

I mailed in my seat deposit 2 weeks ago, and my check hasn't been cashed yet. Although I emailed them to tell them that I am coming, I am worried!!! I hope the check made it ok. It usually takes some time right?! I am just being anal. Think they cash a bunch of them all at once? I had a fee waiver from UA, so I didn't have to send them a check when I applied.

Someone ease my mind.

Incoming 1Ls / Running ExamSoft via BootCamp on a new Mac
« on: March 28, 2007, 12:26:43 PM »
Hey!

I know there are a lot of laptop threads, but I need a mac nerd to help me out.

I want to buy a new Mac for law school. My iBook is 3+ years old, and the disc drive is broken (as of last week!), so it is time to replace it.

I hear the new Intel processors SUCK. Is that true?

Has anyone run ExamSoft via Bootcamp on a newer Mac? I am curious how well this works.

I don't want to buy a PC laptop, but I will if it the new Macs aren't as good.

I'd love your input!

Well, would you?!?!?!!?!?

I feel like it is either do that or pay multiple deposits. Which is dumber?!

I am about to finish my last semester of grad school. I have 2 30-page papers to write, multiple group projects, a PT job, and a wedding to plan. I really can't take any more time off to visit until the summer, and furthermore, I can't afford it. Flights out of Austin are not cheap (small airport). Deposits are due SOONish.

Choosing the Right Law School / Certificate Programs
« on: March 08, 2007, 08:40:21 AM »
Hey,

I have been admitted to the Univ of FL. One of the programs that they offer is a certification in intellectual property (along with other certificates in other areas). Do other schools do this? Is this a FL thing? So far, UF is the only school that I have come across that does this. I am just wondering if it is common, and if it is advantageous in any way.

Thanks!

Choosing the Right Law School / UA vs. UF vs. UH INPUT PLEASE
« on: March 05, 2007, 11:17:57 AM »
Hi,

Please tell me which you would pick and why:

Univ of AL
Univ of Florida
OR
Univ. of Houston (PT)

I want to stay in the south. I want a public school. People with experience at these schools, or those who have researched these programs, please give me some impressions. I have looked at them all, and none of them are ideal, but none of them are out.

Any help would be appreciated. I have been thinking about this a lot, and I need a new perspective.
