Title: Bush legacy as dictator buster is solid...add Liberia to list!!!
Post by: ! B L U E WAR R I O R..! on March 16, 2006, 10:06:35 AM
Liberian President Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf has become one of the few women to address a joint sitting of the United States congress.

In a speech which was frequently interrupted by standing ovations, she said US aid was helping to restore peace to Liberia and West Africa.

She promised to make Liberia "America's success story in Africa."

Mrs Johnson-Sirleaf is due to meet President George W Bush next week.

You are going to try to give Bush the credit for this?  They have been in Civil War for 17 years and hundreds of thousands of people have died, and it happens to end under Bush's rule and you are going to give him the credit for it?  What did he have to do with it?  You really are delusional.

A true liberator would go after regimes like this first.  But Liberia doesn't have oil, now, do they?  It's repulsive that you are going to attempt to coopt this small step in the right direction on a backward continent as proof that our own tyrant is doing a good job.

yeah and bush gets blamed for katarina even though he did nothing wrong, just because he was the tyrant in charge at the time.  it goes both ways.

actually, katrina's slightly different.  people weren't blaming him for the hurricane.  people were blaming him for what they saw was a lack of response on his part, along with a perceived cronyism that allowed incompetent people to be in charge of emergency efforts.

understood.. but he was in "charge" when the lack of response occured, even though nobody thought that what happened would happen.  he was supposed to be clairvoyant..

DJ's right here. Bush knew that it was a possibility that a hurricane hitting New Orleans would be a major disaster.

Every couple of years, FEMA sets up "major disaster scenarios," which map out possible major disasters. One of the possible major disasters on the report? A major hurricane hitting the Big Easy. Thus, he had knowledge that this not only could happen, but that -if it did happen- it would be a major disaster needing major relief.

He also had as much as 10 days advance notice that Katrina very likely would hit, thanks to our friends at NOAA.

yeah and bush gets blamed for katarina even though he did nothing wrong, just because he was the tyrant in charge at the time.  it goes both ways.

Actually, many people thought that what happened would happen.  And Bush personally had been warned of what would happen.  And then he flat-out lied that no one could have foreseen what happened.

It's very nice that Taylor will have to face justice, that is, if President Obasanjo agrees to let go of him. And there exists some evidence that the Bush administration is putting some pressure on him to do that. For that, we should be thankful.

But, at the same time, should we not also vigorously request that the Bush administration do all it can in Zimbabwe (where the cost of intervention would be very moderate) or in Darfur (where the situation is dire)? And would we not like also to see a permanent venue for the bringing of such people to justice? Like, oh, I don't know, an international court of Justice?
