Title: What should I wear for a law school visit ?
Post by: LawDiv25 on March 11, 2005, 11:42:40 AM
I know this question sounds weird ( and stupid ) But I have a meeting with the Dean of Admissions after the campus tour, and I don't want to be over or under dressed. Any suggestions?

Am I to assume you wore a full tuxedo and tophat?

No I havn't, I'm actual on the wait list for one, and I have not heard back from the other yet.

And yes, I am supposing that my hot pink tights and mini-skirt are not appropriate...

I wore a suit and tie...

They guy who did the tour after me wore jeans and a sweater...

I felt overdressed, he felt under...

I suppose somewhere in between would be good.

I wore some turn-up jeans, flip-flops, and a shirt that says, "Yale is my female dog"

I was going to wear my "F--- Law School, I Got Into the American Truck Driving School" t-shirt, but I spilled chili all over it.

I'd just wear whatever you'd normally wear at a college.  However, if you've not yet been accepted, a suit might not be a bad idea for the meeting w/ the dean.

Black pants with a nice sweater or blouse is absolutely can't miss safe.  Not as dressy as a suit, but nicer than jeans or khakis.

God when I visited Loyola I literally rolled out of bed and put on my flip flops and a sweatshirt.  It was also pouring and I'd forgotten an umbrella.  Everyone else had gone all out.  The most dressed down person besides me was a girl in a blazer, jeans and heels.  But I didn't care I had already been accepted and the rest of my group was so uptight it kind of turned me off the school.  They were probably nervous though.  I don't know I think if you're in it doesn't really matter, I mean the students weren't any better dressed than me.  But if you need to make a good impression I probably wouldn't go with the suit as it's a bit over the top unless you're going to an actual interview, but dress as nice as you can without it being obvious you got dressed up.

No, no, no. I remember...they went so well with the other two pairs I received:

I've tried to make it around to visit all of the schools to which I've applied.  Based on my experience, I'd shoot for business casual.

This was my approach, flawed as it was:

Suit and Tie to the Law Forum in Chicago - (WAY OVERDRESSED)
Suit and Tie to I.U. for scheduled visit with admissions and professor of communications law - (A little too formal, but OK because of my meeting with the dean of admissions)
Suit and Tie to Kent for their open house - (WAY OVERDRESSED)
Kahki's and a nice sweater with a collared shirt at Case-Western, Valpo, NIU, Toledo, UIUC and Depaul (I definately felt that this attire was more appropriate than wearing a suit.)

That just leaves me with Catholic, George Mason, Michigan State and UT to visit.  Michigan State is next week and Catholic is the week after.
