wow. why did the North Carolina schools take such a hit? Duke, UNC, Wake all dropped.

This is true... None of the dips were that bad IMO But maybe that's because I'm just amazed at how UMiami plunged from 70 to 82. That one was a big surprise. Well, not really, considering how underwhelmed I was with their attitude from the get go, but still. Ouch.

For me, the rankings are a baseline indicator. For example, I'm currently trying to decide between Wake Forest and UF. If UF dipped again after having lost 6 points last year, that would have scared me off of UF, because it would have indicated an overall downward trend.

On the other hand, Wake dropping from 36 to 42 isn't shocking, because there was a huge block of 36 last year, which has been divided into 2 at 36, 4 at 38, and 2 at 42.

A dip like the one Davis took, from 34 to 44 is really huge.

I just think it goes to show that schools have no clue what's going to happen. FSU admins were bragging all over the ASD back on 02/22 about how we all needed to watch the US News rankings this year, because I believe they saw themselves not only breaking T1 (and I'm surprised they didn't, actually), but also eclipsing UF. They were quite smug about it too.

And holy s@%t @ in the time it took me to post this 10 new replies being posted.

Yeah, FSU tells all their incoming students that, as well as their current 1L's.  It's sad, and one of the reasons I'm probably choosing UF over FSU.
In:  UF, Tulane, FSU($), Miami($$$), Stetson, Oregon($)
Out: Washington and Lee
W/L: Arizona
Decision: UF c/o 2011!

Anyone else notice that Chicago's student faculty ratio seems a little bit low?

It was just this attitude which is why I decided I couldn't go to FSU, even if I didn't get into UF. They seem to be plagued by this obsession with beating UF, so much so that they put themselves out there and make big claims, and then it doesn't happen. That loses credibility. It kind of is like when a politician says they're going to win and then they lose in a landslide. Not that FSU dropped huge or anything, but to put yourself out there and tell everyone at your ASD that you should choose FSU because they're going to trounce UF this year... that's just setting yourself up.

Nice to see George Mason drop a few spots and William and Mary go up one.  William and Mary is clearly the better Virginia school.

Also glad to see Wake drop.  Why would anyone go there?  If you want to practice in NC got to UNC.

On the other hand I don't get Alabama's rise to #32.  I decided not to apply there because I thought their #36 rankng was inflated.  It has to be the highest ranked school with the worst job prospects.

Finally, glad that Tulane moved up a couple of spots.  I think it's fully recovered from the effects of Katrina now.  Hopefully it will continue to inch up there.  It'd be nice to see it break top 40.

What seems odd in print version of this is that they have put the schools which are ranked at #100 (mercer, syracuse, buffalo, stetson & louisville) into BOTH the numerical lists for tier 2 and for the unranked tier 3 list.  I wonder if that was intentional or a US News error.

Glad to see Hofstra back in tier 2 --
NYLS and Pace, as always, are in tier 3.

I still find it absurd that Wash U is above GW, but such is life haha.

Also, GMU is only as good as it is because of the cost of tuition so they attract a lot of high caliber applicants, most of which never actually attend, but by applying, permit them to affect their ranking.  Furthermore, GMU is pretty unknown for BIGLAW placement so it's really just an economically feasible choice for some.

Wow, Georgia State jumped 9 spots. It's rising in leaps and bounds every year.

So much of the rankings seem to be the same as last year. I have such a hard time believing Georgia and Alabama will continually be ranked the same. And I was hoping to see Emory go up a bit. They have got to raise the GPAs.

Also, to the poster who mentioned Bama having the worst job prospects, have you ever thought that maybe, just maybe, they have better prospects than the OL's around here think? I know plenty of grads who made it to Atlanta BigLaw, and even L.A. Biglaw (with no personal connections there. Specifically, my best friend's sister lived her whole life in Bama, went to Bama undergrad and law school, now makes bank in LA. Maybe this is an exception, but I seriously doubt it. Job prospects out of Bama are not strictly limited to Alabama.)
