For me, the rankings are a baseline indicator. For example, I'm currently trying to decide between Wake Forest and UF. If UF dipped again after having lost 6 points last year, that would have scared me off of UF, because it would have indicated an overall downward trend.
On the other hand, Wake dropping from 36 to 42 isn't shocking, because there was a huge block of 36 last year, which has been divided into 2 at 36, 4 at 38, and 2 at 42.
A dip like the one Davis took, from 34 to 44 is really huge.
I just think it goes to show that schools have no clue what's going to happen. FSU admins were bragging all over the ASD back on 02/22 about how we all needed to watch the US News rankings this year, because I believe they saw themselves not only breaking T1 (and I'm surprised they didn't, actually), but also eclipsing UF. They were quite smug about it too.
