Yikes.  Not unprecedented though.  I applied in 03/04 and received a similar letter from UCLA.  Nothing ever came of it, thankfully.

I just got the email.  They're probably coming in batches.  Did anyone get one saying a SSN was vulnerable?
Cycle finally finished!

That's interesting.  I applied at around the same time as you, and also used the online status checker, but didn't get either email.

Ok I just jinxed myself - got the email a minute ago.

Not the email I wanted to receive from Duke.  Jerks.

The one I got says that my SSN is safe, and that the primary concern is with the password I used to check my app status.

If you got the SSN email, you should probably go to

http://www.ftc.gov/bcp/conline/pubs/alerts/infocompalrt.shtm

and follow the instructions to place an initial 90 day fraud alert with one of the credit reporting agencies. I used Equifax and it was pretty painless.

I also got the "might have been" compromised email. I concur with the above: not the email I hoped to receive from Duke.

I got this email, as well. At this point I forget -- didn't they just assign us passwords?

Yikes

How are they jerks because someone hacked the website?  The hackers weren't trying to get your passwords; they were trying to use the site to bump the google ranking for their spam sites.

I was joking.  What I meant was, "This wasn't the email I wanted to get from Duke... I would have preferred another one."  Like an acceptance.

That said, I personally and sincerely apologize to the admissions officials at Duke.  I am sure they are all lovely people.
