This is TERRIBLE advice.

I'm so terribly glad you think so. Your opinion is valuable to me, and I want to assure you that I'm taking it seriously.

Wanker.

Only the middle class in the UK uses the term 'wanker.'  Gross.

That's so not true, anyway!

Aside from the fact that you're incorrect because I have used the term and am not a middle-class Brit, I think it's delightful that you're such a snob. Way to be.

I think you gave terrible advice about what the meaning of college is.  I feel bad if thats truly what you think it is about.

Feel bad all you want. I couldn't be happier with my college experience. Since I liked it so much, I'd like to recommend pursuing a similar one to other people. I'm sorry you didn't have any fun in college, though, and you feel like you didn't learn anything. That's a shame.

I had lots of fun in college, and learned quite a bit.  I just think the vocational side needs to be stressed more.

As a senior in high school, you should be partially making your decision based on exit opps.  No hedge fund is going to be looking at UK grads for example..

If you are going to be learning all the other *&^% you don't know while training yourself for a job that's one thing, but if you are just going to be a skilled ignorant a-hole there's a problem.  I have no problem with trying to do both.

um yes it is.  i know more than you about this.

::shrug::

You probably do. I dated an Eton guy who said it all the time, but statistical outliers and all that.

Dash's point about your snobbery remains the credited one.

I feel like Confused is going to win this battle.

That.... people should not have fun or learn in college? I guess maybe. It's hard to see either side winning.

And yes, I'm gathering that he lives or has lived in England. Or is British. As you're so coyly pointing out. I met fancy people over there who used the word wanker plenty, but I'm sure he knows more than I do.

Maybe I read the wrong post, but I agree with your suggestion to actually learn something and improve yourself in college.  I wish I could stay here for a few more years, because not only do I realize how much of a dumbass I was as a freshman, I realize that I am still a dumbass!

Bingo. But you're less of a dumbass now, and isn't that sort of wonderful and heartening?

College, at least as long as you're going somewhere that is at least interested in doing the liberal-arts thing, should not be vocational; they have many other institutions for that. And furthermore, life is not or at least should not be about work.

dash is a snob in her own right by telling people what to do and how to think.

Merely a recommendation, albeit a strongly worded one. I believe in people's right, generally, to make themselves miserable once they've been thoroughly warned.

Maybe, but outright class snobbery is just so gauche, dahling, don't you think?

I mean, really? You talk like a middle-class person! Oh, snap!
