Need help finding a few more schools to apply to!
« on: November 15, 2007, 11:47:18 PM »
I need help! I'm planning on getting my law school applications out in the next month. I've decided on four schools I'd really like to apply to, but feel like I should add 1 or 2 more...just to be safe and keep my options open. UNC-Chapel Hill is my first choice, but my scores are not really on par and I think the odds are pretty low. Any suggestions? My minimum requirement is to stay on the East Coast.

GPA: 3.57 (Elon University)
LSAT: 159 (I've taken it twice, first time was a 157)
I've been out of school and working since graduating in '06 so I'm hoping that will help boost my application as well (I've been both a paralegal and research assistant since then).

Schools I'm applying to...

UNC-Chapel Hill
Campbell Law
Florida State
George Mason
Accepted: Campbell($$), Florida State, UNC
Waitlisted:
Rejected:George Mason

NC Central would probably be willing to give you money- though they're dirt cheap as it is if you're an in-state resident. Are you a resident of NC?

The last question really is necessary to figure your chances at UNC. You're in good shape with your GPA (though not great), and at least in the middle 50% for the LSAT, but it would take a very strong application otherwise and residency (I think) to get in there.

Otherwise, Tulane might be a good fit for you- though I don't know if that's east coast enough for you. They seem to have a very good (surprisingly even) reputation in the southeast. You're really looking regionally, though, so I think you need to consider places you'd like to live in particular...and then go from there.

South Carolina would be a good safety school for you.

I am an NC resident, so I do have that going for me. Unfortunately, I'm back and forth about whether or not I'm committed to the idea of practicing law in NC after graduating. I like the idea of going elsewhere (D.C. maybe?) but at the same I've been working in Raleigh for 1 1/2 years now - so my best job contacts are here. I've looked at schools in the D.C. area but I'm really hesitant to take on a $30,000 + tuition.

Hey Beth-

If you are thinking DC, Catholic might be a good safety school. I am living in DC right now, so I am applying pretty much everywhere here as well! American could also be a good choice, depending on what you are interested in.
