That is a significant question.

I read about a month ago that sometimes schools toward the bottom can be just overturned based on aftershocks when schools shift at the top; because the number 1 school *must* have an overall score of 100 and the very last school has to have a 0? (or something like that... the whole rankings formula is kind of nutty)

Anyway, when a school drops 17 in two years, that is worrisome. For that matter, take even UNC, this school has dropped 11 spots in 2 years. It dropped 9 spots last year and another 2 spots this year, going from 25-36-38. And there are apparently some serious problems going on there, because they can't even get their act together when it comes to admissions. (look at LSN and you'll see what I mean, I think they maybe admitted 30% of their class and it's going to be April)

There is a methodical measure to these schools, as simple as if the schools below Miami suddenly got overall scores higher due to increased LSAT/GPA or peer evaluation scores, or whatever the heck went up, that's invariably going to bump down Miami if they didn't do anything to go up.

It'd be more worthwhile if you could get a hold of the total numbers for US News's evaluation of Miami for rankings from 2007-2009 and see what's changed. That's going to be more indicative that the school's overall ranking.

it's a joke that you guys are quibbling over rankings.  This USNWR crap is ONE set of rankings by ONE easily impressionable private journalistic medium.  If they were ABA rankings it would be different.  If you Miami people want something to feel better about after the new rankings, look at all the BIGLAW firms' websites in South Florida, go to the  Attorneys section and look at how many UMiami people there are in the firms.  THERE ARE TONS AND THEY WANT TO HIRE YOU TO HELP THEIR SCHOOL!!!

I agree with this for the most part. Yet the rankings thing makes me laugh because we all hate them when our school(s) of choice go down, but when they do well, everyone loves the rankings.

What is more important than this, at least for Miami, is the progress of FIU. Because FIU offers an attractive proposition for a lot of people. It doesn't enjoy the alumni base that Miami has, and it won't for a while, but if it gains a name as a solid institution in Miami at a far cheaper price, that will pose a big threat to the hegemony UM has on the market and may force UM to step its game up a little. Right now, I don't think UM feels it has to compete with anyone. A lot of people who choose Miami go there because they want to study IN Miami and network IN Miami, so this makes them overlook the rankings disparity with UF and FSU. But with crosstown competition, Miami finally has a potential rival.

The Dean said yesterday that the median lsat changed from 158 to 157, which is why the rankings dropped.  Also, the employment rate after graduation dropped from 93% to 90% causinng a drop as well.  He was critical of the formula used by US news.

everyone knows those rankings are a joke, including hiring partners in firms.  the only people who care/stress about rankings are us prospective law students. quite futile.

How was Accepted Student Day? I don't live in FL so I wasn't able to attend on the short notice I had. Definitely would love to hear anyone's experiences there yesterday.
