Are Asians considered to be URMs in terms of law school?

I've heard mixed reports on whether law schools consider Asians to be URMs. Does anyone have any insight?

I would think they are ORMs.

The law school has no way to differentiate between Asian subgroups... all they see is Asian/Pacific Islander unless you actually specify in your personal statement or similar. I stated that I was Indian on the diversity statement that I used for a few schools.

i am indian too. i don't see too many indians going to law school seeing as how law is not a respected profession in the indian community. too bad we can't separate ourselves from the very general Asian/Pacific Islander.

it all depends on the school
regions with large numbers of asian americans who are successful will not mark you URM, those where asian americans are rare and probably faced hardship in the region because of it probably will.
also, some schools, notably west coast ones, will differentiate between the different asian groups. with different categories for chinese, japanese, indians etc. who are generally more successful, and the lao, hmong, filipinos, etc. who are not.

It depends on the school and location.. Affirmative action policies put minorities in different sub-groups and let them compete within a sub-group.  For some groups this provides a URM boost, but for Asians at certain schools the bar is higher than their caucasian counterparts, resulting in what is arguably de facto discrimination.  For these cases it would be advantageous if the asian applicant could declare themself as caucasian.

I think the poster was refering to "East Indian", as opposed to Native American/Amerindian. But, I could be wrong.
