When should I give my recommenders thank-you gifts?

When the letter is processed by LSAC?  When I start submitting my apps? When I've started getting decisions?  When I know where I'm going?

I thought maybe I'd just send a thank-you note when the letter is processed, then a small gift when I know where I'm going.  eh?
