go to best school you can and look for summer gigs at west coast firms with concentation of IP (specifically Licensing).  Outside of the top flight, look at UW/Hastings/Santa Clara.  The industry is largely on the west coast.

work in a firm for 4-5 years doing IP work and then apply to in-house positions at a company.  they won't want you before you're trained.
