What personal traits would make a decent LS student?
« on: July 18, 2007, 04:21:57 PM »
Hi, everyone, hope all is well.

I am a nontrad (almost 35 and would be a career changer) who is in a heated debate with himself right now on whether or not to take the first leap: law school. The thing bothering me most is this: can I fit into LS environment and do reasonably well (in other words, fitness and character, but not in the senses frequently appeared in the bar context). I am not terribly concerned about my own financial situation (have enough saving to tie me over at least for 1L and 2L). Can anyone provide some thoughts / advices on what would make a good LS student?  The one I am pretty sure of is that one has to be good at critical thinking and reasoning.

Thanks in advance for you contribution!!!

Hi there,

Granted I'm a 0L and haven't started school yet but so far from my research and law related experience, a successful law student would possess the following qualities:

ability to look at both sides of an argument
organization
professionalism
excellent time management skills
attention to detail
critical reading skills
good problem solver
discipline

The good thing is if you've been in the professional world, youve probably developed a lot of these, especially compared to a lot of the younger people who either came straight from college or no work experience.

Good luck!

Some key traits have already been listed above.  In general, I'd add...

Compassion
Perseverance
Preparedness

The ability to kiss much ass probably wouldn't hurt from time to time!  :-*
