Jobs for Law Firms?
« on: September 21, 2004, 01:45:27 PM »
So, now that I'm unemployed, I think it's an excellent time to find a job doing something I WANT to do, rather than *&^% work for a bad IT firm.

The question is, how do I find a job working for a law firm? Pay is negotiable (well, 30k would be nice, but I'm figuring I'll have to get a part time job as well).

Check the classifieds, there are tons of legal secretary positions.  A lot of firms look for experience but a college degree might mean something to some of them.  I got my law firm job because I'm to your friends, cousins, hairdressers, see if anyone you know knows an attorney looking for someone interested in law school.  That interest will turn them'll want to be like them and they like that.  Yet, if you are looking for biglaw experience I'm not sure how much anything but the classifieds will help.  I saw one ad for an NYC firm seeking IVY LEAGUE grads only...starting at 75K or something...not bad.

You want to do secretarial type work, right? I maybe remembering incorrectly.

Join a temp agency? Let me tell you, though, it's brutal. We're never nice to temps. As a matter of fact, they usually end up running out in tears. I kid you not... so spare yourself.

Do you have any connections? That would be the best way to go about getting a job in a law firm (that's how I got my internship)... and also the best way you can ensure you won't be treated like crap once you get there. I would ask your mom and dad if they have any cronies in law. Or ask your friends. Yeah, call me a cop-out elitiest bastard, but seriously, it'll work out better that way. Sad, but true.

I got my job at a law firm through a "Legal Staffing Agency".   Yes, it's a temp agency, but only caters to law firms.  I agree that law firms are harsh on temps, so go there and be tough!  lol ... I'm not a secretary though, people weren't too brutal to me ... they were nice to me because I sorted their mail each morning.  HA! ... but now I file their *&^%, so now they're REALLY nice.

Anyway ... it can be done ...

You're in Chicago, right?

Try these web sites:

I hope *SOMETHING* in there will help you. :)

(If you're not in Chicago, I apologize.  I must have remembered wrong ...)
