yes there is a severe penalty. it will go on your permanent record with the ABA and when it comes time for the bar exam, it will raise many red flags about your ethics. lawyers are supposed to be honest and ethical people, so someone who does what you're describing might be intensely scrutinized. you most likely will eventually get admitted, but it all depends on who is reviewing your application.
