Anyone else here been to/have an interest in Africa? 

I went last year, and a friend of mine went back this summer and talking with her while she's there is bringing back a lot of memories from my time there. 

I'd like to hear about anyone else's experiences here.

Ivory Coast, Ghana, Burkina Faso.  Just for a couple weeks each time.

That's awesome.  I had a chance to volunteer in Ghana a few summers ago but chickend out.  I regret that decision.

Shoulda gone for it - Ghana has one of the most efficient and well managed refugee camps I have ever seen.  There was even chess club and a movie night.

I had a friend who volunteered at the refugee camp I would've been assigned to (for Liberian refugees), and he actually told me the camp was horribly run.  I can't say my experience in Kenya was any better.  I wasn't at a refugee camp though.  I was at an orphanage in a slum, which brought with it its own set of problems.  Apparently the orphanage has gotten better, though that's mostly because the corrupt person who served as head teacher when I was there left after getting into a fight w/ some of the volunteers there.  Good riddance.

Visited Africa on a few occasions and it has been very interesting, in lack of a better word. Not at all like I expected it would be before going.

Mine was a refugee camp for Liberians as well, but they seemed to have their sh!t together.  I'm sure there's more than one, unfortunately.  Do you know how many people were supposed to be at the camp your friend was at?

Currently there are just over 40,000 refugees at the camp.  Not sure how many there were when my friend was there 3 summers ago.
