30 and starting college with hopes of law degree
« on: June 20, 2007, 11:35:57 PM »
I am 30 and have less than 18 college credits, would like to start working on a degree in History.

Am I going to be the only 30 year old doing this?

Howdy,

In my history classes, there were a few students who seemed over than 29, but the often contributed a ton of valuable stuff (with a few exceptions).  Education is something awesome, and it's nothing to feel alienated about at all.

I was 45 when i started college with 0 credits. I am now 48 and after 2 1/2 years I just graduated today, and I will be starting Rutgers/Newark school of law this fall. That is unless Fordham calls.

Its never too late. Just do it

At 30 I'm  one of the youngest in some of my classes.

There's a 45 y/o with a grown daughter who's ditching the 911 dispatch job to become a doctor; a landscaper who wants to be a broker at 40; and several more who are doing what they want to do. Most of us look about as ragged as the "real" UGs and the only way profs can tell the difference is that we're happy to be there and don't mind contributing. :D

I say all that to say, embrace your status. It has its perks.
I tested between 151 and 162. I hoped for the high end and ended up in the middle. Still, not a bad plan overall, I think.

LSAT: 156 (not taking it again and you can't make me)
GPA: 3.4ish. Still a semester to go
URM, non-trad, 12 yrs work exp, published
Looking for low debt and high aid

Go for it. I started college at 25, and I certainly wasn't the oldest in my class. Even the guy well into his 40s had no problems getting study partners and even fitting in socially, although he did seem overly concerned about being around the younger girls, probably to avoid being stigmatized as "one of those guys". It's my impression that those of us from 25 and above fit in very well with the 18-19 year old crowd, so I wouldn't worry about it. Best of luck to ya.

I had 9 credits when I went back to school at age 36.  I finished my undergrad in Psych in Dec 06, and am entering law school this August.  I'll (hopefully) be taking my Bar Exam days after my 44th b-day.  You can do it!!
