Summer associates working during school year?

Does this happen often?  What's typical workload / compensation?

I think sometimes they work part-time as law clerks during their 3L years (in some cases during their 2L year).  Don't know about the pay, but I am sure it is decent.

some work at the firm who have given them an offer (if the frim is in the same city as the ls) during 3L.

My firm does ~20 hours for $1600/wk. It's cake...but only a hand full of people get it.
