Law students (or soon-to-be students) giving legal advice

I'm sure many law students have parents/friends asking them for legal advice all the time (or just legal questions).  What are you supposed to do in those situations, and is it different from what you actually do?  I already have people asking me vague legal questions ("What do you know about real estate law?  Have you taken any of that yet?  What is racketeering?")  What do you say to these people?  I expect it to become more prevalent once I actually start school, too.

Hah, but it's not really practicing law though, is it?  I dunno.

Just remind them you're not an attorney and refer them out.  Most of the time, the "principles" you've learned in law school aren't necessarily going to do 'em much good anyway.  Hey, I am an attorney and, when people ask me a question outside of my field of expertise, I refer 'em to someone that might be able to help.

Law students aren't supposed to give out legal advice, but I'll offer it to my sister or a random stranger on the Internet.  For a fee, of course.
