1L and Suicide
« on: June 05, 2007, 08:37:46 PM »
Does anybody know if this has ever happened?

Any 1Ls get driven so far to the edge that they snap and commit suicide?

People in every profession/school kill themselves.  It's not just a 1L thing.

It's not that horrible.  But if you need to talk to someone at any time during 1L, PM me. :)

I ask because Law School seems like it can be an alienating process.  Here you are trying to figure out what you are going to do with your future, while acquiring all this debt, all this pressure to perform, and on top of it all a good deal of the circumstances are out of your control.  I could see how some wouldn't cope with it very well.  It also seems like Law School pressures would be worse than those in college and of course there are numerous stories about lawyers that can't take thier lives that turn to this final option.

In April there was the Empire State Building jumper; supposedly egged on by crushing debt and the horror of legal tempdom.  Makes you wonder.  What will people do when they get those first semester grades and realize that they are not in the top half?

What do you do when the immortal words of George Strait stop feeling like passion and begin to resemble somethin else?

There's a shortcut to the highway out of town...
Why don't you take it?

Law school doesn't kill people; I kill people.

Guns don't kill people; people kill people.   :D

...while acquiring all this debt, all this pressure to perform...

I don't get all this "debt fear" discussion.  After twenty years of managing multiple mortgages, equity loans, vehicle loans and student loans (all of which I've handled  on anywhere from $30K to $65K/year), I just don't understand the "big debt deal."   ???

Do you think you can do well enough in law school to get a job offer that will pay the bills with a little left over for savings/investment (not for partying or frivolous entertainment expenses)?  Then go to law school.  If not, get some other (cheaper) graduate degree (or none at all) and get a job commensurate with your education and experience.

Don't kill yourself over 1L year in law school.  I can think of better things for which to off yourself--none being economic or academic in nature.

Just declare bankruptcy after you're done with school.

You can't discharge student loan debt through bankruptcy.

You also may not be able to get a law license with a recent bankruptcy.

Yes, someone I knew did it.
And there were a few that everyone was worried would do it.
When you have somebody dying because they are poor and black or poor and white or because of whatever they are ... that erases everything that's great about this country.

Well maybe get a law license and then declare bankruptcy. I'm sure there have to be some loopholes that you can find.
