This posting is like one of those things where you cant stand to watch but cant look away....

Not a law school story...

Last year of grad school and end of finals week.  Went to the testing center, requested the test number.  Took the test, felt like Avatar on that Crim Law exam.  One week later, all finals graded and in student mailboxes.  Go to my mailbox, got an A on the final.  Did my happy dance, only for 30 seconds.  Looked at the notes from the professor, almost died on the spot.  The note said...

"This is excellent work and by far one of the best exams I have graded in my tenure. Unfortunately, because you are not a student assigned to my class, your grade of "A" cannot be applied to your academic transcript."

Long story short, I took the wrong exam.  Same subject matter, different professors.  Three hours of my life gone to waste...

So what happened!?!??!?!  Don't leave us hanging!!!

My bad. Turns out it was not all my fault. I did request the right test number but in mentioning the name of the class at the same time, the test center clerk ended up giving me the wrong test. I went to my professor (who, by the way, is one of those black females who feels she has to show tough love to black female students and hold them to a higher standard) and explained to her the situation.  Of course the whole time she looked at me like I was the dumbest person she had ever seen but she did let me sign up to take the correct exam.  I ended up getting an A on the final and a whole lot of suggestions in red.

cui bono?

Lemme add my own academic semi-horror story.
1st semester:

taking notes.  Outlines almost completed. Exams around the corner. Computer doesn't exactly shut down but it "blacks out".  Comp turns on but is black.  Can make out very little.  Freak out time.  Then...wait...everything is saved on traveldrive about 2 hours before the black out.

*Whew*

moral of story:  (1)Buy and obsessively save everything to your travel drive.   (2)Don't freak out...you're smarter than u realize.

Haterade horror story w/ happy ending:
So law school's competitive right?  It's just like high school sometimes, right?  Here's the scene.  Networking reception.  BigLaw.  From all over the country. I'm all over.  Taking business cards & giving my own out.  Females from my school come late.  They ask me to help them network since they are shy.  Alright, I introduce them to some folks.  Along the way, they see that folks were more interested in what I had to offer.  Basically, we're all talking to these ppl as a group and the attorney/judge keeps on focusing the convo onto me. I try to get them into the convo.  No dice.  Chicks are not happy at this point!  One spills a drink on me (purposely) and they all laugh.  Unbeknowst to them -  back up jacket nearby.  I leave.  Grab the jacket.  5 mins later I m back.  See chicks talking to guy- partner in a big time firm.  I can tell guy's not interested in whatever they're talking about.  So your gyrl, strolls up.  Mind you, dude is WATCHING me walk from across the room. Introduce myself, shake his hand.  Dominate the convo, this time purposely.  They try to interrupt.  No dice. We're vibing. So you'd think they'd quit right...nope.  Still w/ the haterade.  Place closes out...I'm still talking to him and they are just standing there listening to the convo.  I say my goodbyes to dude and start to walk off.  Gyrls follow nearby.  Dude follows me out...yells my name out cause he cant catch up to me.  Everyone turns around incl.  those girls.   They try to block..."umm I didn't get your card, Mr.--".  Him:  I'm sorry...have we met? Anyway, cui bono, I really enjoyed our conversation..make sure you give me a call....here's my home number." From my vantage point I can see their faces.  Mouths wide open.  Rolling of the eyes.  Nice.  I love it!

Moral:  Don't be shady.  But don't be as nice as I was.

*shaking my head*  you can't be serious.  Thats one of those things where you just have to be like "watch and learn; and, get in where you fit in" lol.  I'm not introducing anyone.  In fact, I'm telling people to pretend like they don't know me while I go for mine.  whoa!

anyway, seems like 7/10 of these stories involve some faulty laptop.  I wondering how we can get around this.  did you all have virus scans?  were you downloading so much music/porn that it screwed up the machine?  Or, is this just something thats inevitable with the testing programs they have you running, causing conflicts on the registry or something, because I've never had these sort of problems with cpus that weren't 10 years old.

unfortunately I'm Quite serious about the haterade story.  Cracks me up cause folks don't realize that making someone else look good makes YOU look 100 times better! It shows confidence and folks are gonna be curious as to what you have to offer that you are so confident. Talking to dude afterwards  (BTW,  he's now my mentor-well, one of them  ;)), what most impressed him was that I wasn't catty. But guys really dont have to worry about that.

Computers- well u need something that can withstand a lot of wear and tear and get a warranty.  The computer I have now, I can chuck it across the room "accidentally" , take into the shop and get a brand new one tomorrow.   BUT BUY A TRAVEL DRIVE- NOW!

Stand under my Umbrella ella ella, aye!!

thats actually true.  I just don't think I would have had the wherewithall to play host to my less able to navigate a networking secenario, friends.  Plus alot of my friends embarrass me 8).   Hopefully in law school I won't have that problem.

I shouldn't say this but... well that's never stopped me b4  :D  ;).  Law school...umm..don't go there expecting to find friends...at least not with your fellow 1Ls.  And if you do...don't form friendships until after the second semester, once grades come out.  It's best just to be "cool" with everybody.  I'm cooler with upperclassmen & alum then anyone in my class.  Why?  Because they just don't get it-  they're too busy hiding books in the library & stealing Barbri CDs to realize that if they would just study during that time, they wouldn't have to hide anything.  It's really not that competitive or at least it doesnt have to be.  Second semester is when ppl's true personalities come out.  You'll see the study groups a'changing, & cliques a'forming.   :D  I like to see myself as a free agent.  Sure I'm closer to some folks in my class but I know wassup now.  I know who to share stuff with and who not to.  Put it this way-   the "1L supplement/outline project"  that I mentioned on the 1L  thread was originally  1L & 2L   (cause I feel like we're just as clueless as 0Ls/1Ls sometimes re: evidence) BLSA member thang-  but on second thought,  they're  (some) on their own.   :P  8)   I don't mean that to sound bitter like they did some ish to me cause it isn't like that  but there are those that aren't about sharing THEIR goodies but want your stuff.

I have a few horror stories... but they have more to do with me being an idiot and less to do with things inherently horrifying about law school...

Lets see...I wouldnt call myself computer savvy when I started law school and the whole concept of backing things up was foreign to me. Well, my computer crashed the day before my first final...Con law. Lost all my outlines, notes, checklists etc. I debated simply begging classmates for notes and handwriting my exam but nooooooooo. I was hell-bent on getting that computer up and running again.

Long story short...I spent all day trying to get the friggin Geek Squad to fix my ish and they couldnt. I lost valuable study time and still ended up with no notes and had to handwrite. I had to handwrite ALL my exams that semester. Needless to say...bombed that con law exam. Did ok on the rest but it was unnecessarily stressful.

So you'd think I'd learned my lesson huh? of course not

I bought a brand new computer the next spring and right before finals...brand new computer crashes. Took another set of finals without notes and with the bluebooks. I guess new computers crash too. ummmm duh.

I'd like to think I am more prepared for the bar exam though...I took like 8 finals with no notes and did ok on most of them. Thats my silver lining and I'm sticking to it.  ;D

So then...

during another semester, I was completely unaware that this one class I'd signed up for was 3 credits and not 2. I planned on dropping the class but never quite got around to it. I only attended the class like 3 times all semester, never bought the book, didnt have the slightest idea what the class was about and towards the end of the semester I went to drop it (because you can drop all the way up until the final) and low and behold...its a 3 credit class and I couldn't drop it because then I would've been part time and we're not allowed to be part time.

So...I took the final exam blind, without a textbook, without notes, without a clue. Didnt answer half the questions. Got a B-  ;) Ahhh, law school curves can be joyful sometimes.

Moral of the story...dont be an idiot  ;D

So this curve can be a good thing?

The law school curve is both a blessing and a curse.  On the one hand, it is very difficult to get a C, on the other hand it is very difficult to get an A.  The latter scenario usually messes with the heads of those students who are used to getting A's, especially when they earn them.  In law school you could earn a 95% on an exam, but if the majority of the class also scores a 95%, 95% will become a B.  I know.  F*cked up right?

yes, it is. So basically, the A's would go to the few that scored above a 95. Wow. And those they may have gotten in the 80 and above range could end up being C's. And to hell with the rest of the grades below that because you're just shyt out of luck

I'm assuming you're a guy from the A phi A in your avatar.   And men aren't like that.  So you don't have to worry.  Women are catty period!  Plus people like that are few and far between.  Most ppl are cool.  But you have some of those that are just too much.  Unfortunately the females that I'm talking about are black.  The thing that they don't realize is that their shadyness makes me look good- better than I normally would.  The guy was impressed that I pretty much blew them out of the water despite their obvious attempts to make me look bad. BE "COOL" WITH YOUR FELLOW 1Ls.  Do not form friendships until after the first semester grades come out.  Because after that is when you see ppl's true natures.     DO NOT UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES SHARE ALL OF YOUR INFORMATION (outlines, supplements, and other goodies) WITH YOUR FELLOW 1Ls.  Even if they are in your study group.  Some things should just be yours and the first year or so it's okat to be a lil' selfish. They are your competition after all.  Me?  People pretty much know that I'm cool and if you ask I'll find some way to help u.  I helped my fellow 1Ls out including the 3 ladies (term used rather loosely) that I referred to.  Did I ever get a lot of help from them?  Nope.   Those ppl will sit on there info and not share it with you while taking yours.  Form friendships w/ 2Ls and 3Ls-  their info is most likely to be forthcoming and (moreso) correct.    It would kinda suck if you helped someone and they ended up doing significantly better than you. Among the 1L members of my chapter, ppl have a great deal of my info.  Not all but a lot.  Find something unique and make it your edge.  BUT KEEP YOUR EDGE "YOUR" EDGE.  Sharing is cool as long as it just that.  Give and take.

Woah!  I don't know who stabbed you in the back, but it's a huuuuuuge overstatement to say women are catty period.  Some people are shady, some aren't.  It has nothing to do with gender.  I have seen men trying to showboat and one-up each other like fools.  I have seen women try to outdo each other as well.  If your attitude is that all women are catty then maybe you shouldn't make friends.

I feel u.  IN PART.  And it was not exactly a statement against all women.  But u have to admit-  we women find some really crazy ways to attack each other.  Men showboat too.  But what happened to me was typically a female thing to do.   That's all.  :) Wasn;'t an attack on you.  So try not to take it so personally.
BTW, "maybe you shouldn't make friends" was an unnecessary statement.
