Lemme add my own academic semi-horror story.
1st semester:

taking notes.  Outlines almost completed. Exams around the corner. Computer doesn't exactly shut down but it "blacks out".  Comp turns on but is black.  Can make out very little.  Freak out time.  Then...wait...everything is saved on traveldrive about 2 hours before the black out.

*Whew*

moral of story:  (1)Buy and obsessively save everything to your travel drive.   (2)Don't freak out...you're smarter than u realize.

Haterade horror story w/ happy ending:
So law school's competitive right?  It's just like high school sometimes, right?  Here's the scene.  Networking reception.  BigLaw.  From all over the country. I'm all over.  Taking business cards & giving my own out.  Females from my school come late.  They ask me to help them network since they are shy.  Alright, I introduce them to some folks.  Along the way, they see that folks were more interested in what I had to offer.  Basically, we're all talking to these ppl as a group and the attorney/judge keeps on focusing the convo onto me. I try to get them into the convo.  No dice.  Chicks are not happy at this point!  One spills a drink on me (purposely) and they all laugh.  Unbeknowst to them -  back up jacket nearby.  I leave.  Grab the jacket.  5 mins later I m back.  See chicks talking to guy- partner in a big time firm.  I can tell guy's not interested in whatever they're talking about.  So your gyrl, strolls up.  Mind you, dude is WATCHING me walk from across the room. Introduce myself, shake his hand.  Dominate the convo, this time purposely.  They try to interrupt.  No dice. We're vibing. So you'd think they'd quit right...nope.  Still w/ the haterade.  Place closes out...I'm still talking to him and they are just standing there listening to the convo.  I say my goodbyes to dude and start to walk off.  Gyrls follow nearby.  Dude follows me out...yells my name out cause he cant catch up to me.  Everyone turns around incl.  those girls.   They try to block..."umm I didn't get your card, Mr.--".  Him:  I'm sorry...have we met? Anyway, cui bono, I really enjoyed our conversation..make sure you give me a call....here's my home number." From my vantage point I can see their faces.  Mouths wide open.  Rolling of the eyes.  Nice.  I love it!

Moral:  Don't be shady.  But don't be as nice as I was.

Stand under my Umbrella ella ella, aye!!

*shaking my head*  you can't be serious.  Thats one of those things where you just have to be like "watch and learn; and, get in where you fit in" lol.  I'm not introducing anyone.  In fact, I'm telling people to pretend like they don't know me while I go for mine.  whoa!

anyway, seems like 7/10 of these stories involve some faulty laptop.  I wondering how we can get around this.  did you all have virus scans?  were you downloading so much music/porn that it screwed up the machine?  Or, is this just something thats inevitable with the testing programs they have you running, causing conflicts on the registry or something, because I've never had these sort of problems with cpus that weren't 10 years old.

<---- Not a law student, yet. However, my plan is to have two laptops. One for all the fun stuff (the music/porn downloading...I kid) and the other strictly for school related things. I also plan to have an extra 80GB external drive. What can I say, I'm technologically paranoid.

Far from but I have an outdated laptop now and will get an updated one for law school.   :D I'm trying to get my dad to give me his external drive since he doesn't use it. I'm a successful mooch and deal finder, that's all.

Besides saving to your hard drive you should always make a copy to a jump/flash drive.  Negates the need to add/increase/buy more storage for your comp (which can be used for just software).

I'm gonna get a Thinkpad, which are supposed to be the best PC going and try to use it strictly for work.  I'm also gonna try and pick up a cheap desktop at some point for the fun stuff.

I've only known of one person with Thinkpad problems.  I didn't have any this year.  Tons of folks had Dell and HP problems, however.  Easy solution: Email yourself your outline every night when you finish working on it.  If you have Gmail it all ends up in the same convo.  Then you always have your work saved, don't have to worry about losing a flash drive, and can access it from anywhere.

What kind of fun stuff do you do? I find that computers are fine as long as you're not one of those people who like to download a million different things that all run at the same time.  Then you're bound for trouble.  So I suppose two comps might be a good idea if you're one of those people.  But if you're only using Word, Outlook, Firefox, AIM, and OneNote, for the most part, you'll be fine.  Best thing to do is delete all of those useless preinstalled programs that come on most computers, then when you have everything set up, run msconfig and uncheck all of the immediately unnecessary programs to keep them all from starting up when you start Windows.
