2006-2007 Admissions Cycle - The Awards
« on: May 14, 2007, 06:52:22 PM »
Inspired by a couple of threads - which of the schools you applied to wins the following: (my apologies in advance for those who only applied to one or two schools)

Best/worst visit/ASW?
Best/worst Admissions office
Best/worst promotional materials
Best/worst acceptance/rejection notification
Best free stuff?
Best/worst moment of cycle
Invent your own award!

Most importantly, who won your deposit check?

----
My winners:

Best visit: Michigan; met lots of awesome LSDers, got to stay for three nights, weather was surprisingly good :)
Worst visit: Georgetown; Too many people there, my student host was a jerk

Best admissions office: Michigan; Dean Z. Enough said.
Worst admissions office: NYU

Best promotional materials: Columbia - very impressive binder
Worst promotional materials: Cornell; most of their stuff was pretty good - but the 'Ithaca - Gorges & Waterfalls' travel guide they sent me (by itself, no accompanying letter) was just too much.  ::) x 100.

Best acceptance: Penn phone call three days before Christmas - Dean Post is pretty awesome, and it was my first t10 acceptance.

Best free stuff: The Columbia Guide to New York is pretty cool and will come in handy even though I'm not going there. Free book from Penn was nice too, even though I haven't gotten around to reading it.

Best moment of cycle: Walking out onto the law quad after the faculty reception during the Michigan ASW - was really the turning point from having no idea where I wanted to attend to starting to make a decision.

Worst moment of cycle: Tie between any moment spent filling out Need Access.

Winner of deposit check: Michigan.

Well, my very short list of schools doesn't make it very interesting, but oh well.  I'll play anyway!

Best visit: Boalt--good people, yummy food, nice weather
Worst visit: Seattle--school was hard to find & too far away from yummy food

Best admissions office: Boalt--sent my application to them last & received response from them first...how nice.
Worst admissions office: Seattle by default.  They only get last place because their status checker was a big liar.

Best promotional materials: Boalt--blue folder
Worst promotional materials:  UW.  The only school that sent nothing.

Best notification: Boalt--early and by email.
Worst notification:  Seattle--came weeks after status checker said it was coming.

Best free stuff?: Boalt--free trip to ASW that had the second-best free stuff: delicious chocolate muffins & some good salsa

Best moment of cycle: UW acceptance; Boalt ASW
Worst moment of cycle: receiving LSAT score; first UW visit

My own award: FOOD SELECTION!
Best: Boalt.  I want to go back just for more.
Worst: The others.  I can't decide whether serving no food is better than serving bad food.

My other own award:  Most beautiful campus/facilities (just so Boalt doesn't win every category).
Best: UW!
Worst: Boalt for building, Seattle for campus

Who won the deposit check?  TBD

Best/worst visit/ASW?
Best Michigan (lots of fun LSDers, lots of great current students, and even great weather, ironically)
Worst Virginia (but all of the actual Virginia stuff was good... I had a cold plus stomach funk, and it was raining ice)

Best/worst Admissions office
Best- honestly, I had the most interaction with Duke's, and they were great.
Worst- Columbia's loss of my Dean's Cert, which came after my own undergrad lying about my Dean's Cert request, which supposedly took a month to get to them in the mail.  Mysteriously, it had just arrived that day I called about it.

Best/worst promotional materials
Best- Northwestern... love their portfolio
Worst- Texas... because I can't really remember getting any

Best/worst acceptance/rejection notification
Best- Georgetown... the only one whose personal note seemed really personal
Worst- Harvard :(  Just because.

Best free stuff?
Virginia at ASW... tshirt plus portfolio

Best/worst moment of cycle
Best... Duke acceptance... it was my first, and it was super quick
Worst... nothing really that upsetting happened.  Harvard rejection, but I was already in love with Michigan, and I didn't really expect to get into Harvard anyway.

Most importantly, who won your deposit check?

MICHIGAN

Michigan, but Harvard was fine, too.

Best/worst promotional materials

MICHIGAN.

Best/worst acceptance/rejection notificatio
n

Best acceptance notification:  Michigan, because it had a nice note.
Worst notification:  Penn hold.  They sent it by email.  At least Chicago and Columbia sent me letters.

Best free stuff?

Duke.  I liked the jump drive.  With Michigan a close second.

Best/worst moment of cycle

Best:  Getting into UVA and NYU on the same day.
Worst:  The Chicago hold.

Invent your own award.  School most like Hogwarts: Michigan.

Best/worst visit/ASW?
 - best - Penn, everything went swell, i got to meet profs, students and explore the area a bit, all in less than 24 hours! Also, they gave me wine and beer.
- worst - UVA, i had such a damn difficult time getting there, but once i got there, it was pretty good even though i was exhausted

Best/worst Admissions office
- best - tie between Penn and UVA, both of them were very nice and clear communicators.
- worst - Cornell. This has more to do with its financial aid. I got some respectable $$ at higher-ranked schools but they didn't give me squat after emailing me to tell me that i was being considered for merit aid.

Best/worst promotional materials

UVA - free t-shirt and portfolio!

Best/worst acceptance/rejection notification

best - Penn. A phone call a few days after christmas after my GULC waitlist
worst - GULC waitlist because that was the first thing that I heard from any law school. GULC was actually my first pick going into this whole process because of my SO and friends.

Best free stuff?

UVA

Best/worst moment of cycle

Best:  getting a scholarship at Penn, my dream school
Worst- GULC waitlist and the fact that i ended up being on 4 waitlists

Invent your own award. eaiest to get to - Penn

Who won your deposit check? PENN.

Best/worst visit/ASW?
Best:  Mich and CLS.  Mich because of the LSDers, and CLS because I just clicked with the school.

Worst:  Fordahm.  Not because the school isn't great, but becasue I only went to meet some LSDers so I wasn't really paying attention to the big details.

Best/worst Admissions office
Best:Mich and CLS.  Dean Z and Todd Rothman are some cool ass ppl.

Worst: None that I know of.

Best/worst promotional materials

Best: CLS. From the binder to the regal box of materials to the guide to NYC, it was all well put together.

Mich and Vandy are close seconds.

Worse: Emory.  The only thing I got from them was my acceptance letter.

Best/worst acceptance/rejection notification
Best:  Chicago, because that was my one and only phone call acceptance.

Worst Getting the NU ding via status check

Best free stuff?
I liked UVa's because they gave us a tshirt and one of those cool leather portfolios.

Best/worst moment of cycle
Worst:  Getting waitlisted at Penn

Best:  Getting into CLS 10 days after the WL  :D :D

Invent your own award!
School I would have gone to had I not gotten into the school I deposited: Chicago

Journeyman, I am dumbfounded as to how you got into IU and W&L with your numbers. 155 LSAT and you applied to Vanderbilt? Honestly?
