I live across the street from Emory right now. You certainly do not need a car by any means. Emory has a great shuttle system that will take you to the grocery store and a shopping mall nearby, and there is tons of housing within walking distance of the school. People think you need a car here because the school is full of spoiled rich kids with beamers who drive everywhere, but it is by no means necessary. Plus, because so many people have cars that their parents give them for free, you can always get a ride someplace if you need it. There is absolutely no way you could justify huge car payments if you come to Emory. But, if you really want the extra freedom of a car (which is very nice to have, of course), you could help yourself out by getting a cheap used car that will get you from point a to point b. don't waste a bunch of money on a nice new car though. seriously, it will be a waste of money here.
