If I had a better handle on the parking situation in Oakland (Downtown/Lake Merrit region), I think that I'd be more likely find a place there.  My gut says it'd be a nightmare unless the apt came with a parking spot.  My gut also suspects that an apt with a parking spot will be more than I'll be willing to pay.  If anyone has any insight, I'd appreciate it.

I'm guessing that I'll end up in El Cerritto or Albany, since everyone that I've ever known who's attended Cal thinks that's where I should live.

I'm not so enthralled by a car that I couldn't see myself selling it:

1) It'd be cheaper without one -- no insurance, gas, parking fees, or registration/title fees to pay --; and
2) Orders of magnitude less eco-guilt.

But, the midwesterner in me likes being able to hop into a car and get myself out of the city on a moments notice.  As it is, I won't be using it to commute to school.  Really, it's an expensive toy and psychological crutch.

I'm currently living in Lawrence, KS.  So it isn't a long drive.  Actually, the drive out to CA is basically vacation.  I wouldn't sell my car until I got to CA.  I figure that I could get a couple of more bucks out of it there.  Plus, it'll help me move my stuff.

I love driving on open roads.  Last summer I drove from Lawrence to Denver to St. Louis to Madison back to Lawrence in the span of 10 days.  I hit a wedding, spent some time with my dad, and attended a beer festival.  It was a great road trip.

I suppose that El Cerrito being far out there is a matter of perspective.  El Cerrito is certainly more suburban than Oakland; in terms of distance to campus, it's probably closer.

Every place that I've looked at in that area came with a parking spot.

Hmmm... interesting.  What sort of apts were you looking for (studio, 1br, 2br)?

Actually, I'm more worried about life outside of school than inside.  From my time in grad school, I know that having a hobby/activity that is completely to your school/professional life is essential.
