REM -- While they have great stuff from the 80s, that is arguably more musically important for actually keeping rock alive in the time of new wave, there more commercially successful albums are from the 90s.  See Out of Time (Losing my Religion, Shiny Happy People), Automatic for the People (Drive, Man on the Moon, Everybody Hurts and Nightswimming) and Monster (What's the Frequency Kenneth, Strange Currencies).  To a lesser extent while not as commercially successful as their other albums, New Adventures in Hi-Fi which was made while on the Monster Tour is, by far, their most complete album.

And of course you have Pearl Jam, Nirvana, Pavement, Radiohead, Sonic Youth, and I would add in Cake, just because I love them!

No Mountain Goats?  I misread this crowd

i like the mountain goats, but they're surely not one of the best bands of the 90s...

Never claimed they were.  The answer, of course, is the Mekons.  Doesn't matter the decade.  1980s? Mekons.  1670s? Mekons.  After the Mekons though, I can't really see an argument against Darnielle.  The sheer output of the 90s is beyond incredible and I don't really see much in the way of competition.

(In no particular order)
Pixies
Radiohead
Pearl Jam (Only up to Vitalogy)
Alice in Chains (they have gotten no love on this board)
Soundgarden
Temple of the Dog
Mad Season
Dinosaur Jr.
Mudhoney
Sonic Youth

OHHHHHHHHHHHH I definitely agree about Alice in Chains. They are actually one of my favorite bands ever. I was so sad when Layne Staley died. I got to see Jerry Cantrell play though! He played a few AIC songs which was a nice tribute.

Temple of the Dog is really good too.

I was sad about Layne Staley, but not surprised.  He did your share of heroin, my share of heroin, and everyone in this thread's share of heroin.  That being said, I am curious to know if it rained when he died.

Have you heard of Mad Season?  It was another one of those "All-Star" groups of PJ, AIC, and SG members.  River of Deceit is worth paying a dollar for on iTunes.

speaking of obscure bands, i really like tugboat annie.

monster.com used one of their songs for a commercial a number of years ago.  i couldnt find out what music it was so i ended up calling monster and was finally patched through to the ceo who hooked me up with a cd.  maybe i should call him back when i need a job

Tugboat Annie! Nice one!

They were on Reverb once and they were great. I'm not sure if I would say there were one of "the best" but I certainly thought they were good.

J, if you didn't bring enough penis for everyone, you shouldn't have brought any penis at all.
