Here's a thread about buying books online,

http://www.lawschooldiscussion.org/prelaw/index.php?topic=67705.msg1568629

It seems that there could be about a 20-30% savings by buying online (new or used).  Given that Emory estimates an expenditure of $2250 per year for books, that could add up to as much as $700 per year in savings if they're basing their estimate on paying full price at the bookstore.

This is a general question for those of you with scholarship offers, specifically the 45k,54k, or 60k varieties over 3 years. You don't have to pay these back, right? I just want to see if they're loans people list as financial aid on LSN, or scholarships as I'm used to the word being used.

Thanks :)

The column on LSN with the heading "$$$$$" is for normal scholarships, not loans.

When will we know what books we need to buy and will we have enough time to try to buy online to save money?

They may actually already be posted online. I think I saw a link to that somewhere.

Will we really save that much buying online?

It's not like there is a huge market for these books out there.

Unless they've changed since previous years, you won't know which books you need until a few days before classes start.  It depends on which section you get assigned to, because that determines which professors you'll have and they're the ones who assign which books you need.

However, I did have one friend who was fanatic about buying all her books used from places like half.com and so on, and I think she seriously managed to save about $400.  I spent about $800-850 on my books first semester, but I only managed to get one of them used, I think.  So that's about as bad as it gets (of course, that's not counting what you'll spend on study aids... they're worse than crack.)

I got a parking spot at the University Inn late last week, which is across the street from the law school.  $500 a semester, $1000 a year.  Worth it considering Emory charges around $650 for parking anyways.  Now I do not have to deal with shuttles.

Wow! This is true. I'm on the phone right now with them. You have to pay $500 upfront and fill out paperwork which may be hard if your across the country.
