when they calculate your grades ... how do they do it ...

1.  add up all your grades and then get your average GPA ...

OR

2.  add up your each year's GPA and then average it over the number of years you went to school ...

I think its 1. but i'm not sure ...

No.  They'll take the number of credit hours times the GPA for the class.  They add all those up, and then divide by the total number of credit hours.

what if your school doesnt assign credit hours to classes?  at northwestern we need 45 courses to graduate instead of a set number of credits.  there is no distinction between a class that meets 3hrs a week and one that meets 5.

Then they must count all those classes equally, if there's no way of telling by your transcript.
