pre-law dean at your school: how helpful is he?
« on: March 23, 2007, 12:10:13 PM »
I figured I'd see how folks at other undergraduate institutions feel about their pre-law dean...

I met with mine, and what can I say, the man has hundreds of other seniors he's going to be working with come fall semester, he's been doing this for decades and is quite stubborn and arrogant. I will go to him when I apply because he is the dean and all, but I won't be expecting much from him...

My pre-law person is an advisor, not a dean, and she was kind.  However, she really only knew about other Florida schools that the people here usually apply for.  But the scores at my school on the LSAT are lower, so I think she is used to dealing with Tear 3 and 4 more than anything.

yeah I have an "official" pre law adviser who didn't go to law school ... hes a cool guy but wasn't a huge help.  We have a "legal studies" department with a few lawyers who teach some business law classes, I've taken a bunch with an HLS grad/ former UVA business prof.  She provided a great deal of help and an awesome LOR.

mine was pretty aweful. she underestimated my potential and I'm glad I didn't listen to her about where I should apply or I would be going to a much worse school than I will be. Also, she kindly offered to go over my PS, but didn't correct mistakes I later found on my own, so overall she was pretty useless, and potentially coulda been even harmful.

While I normally complain about my undergrad, our pre-law dean was awesome.  She really helped me with my essays, read them probably a dozen times.  She also really encouraged me to look at some higher schools where I actually ended up getting in to.  Lastly, she helped me connect with a dean of admissions at a top 20 which helped me get an acceptance to that school.

I never went to see the pre-law dean a single time.

Useless.  Ours consistently said that the rankings don't mean bunk and I'm pretty sure advised one of my friends to go to a local TTT instead of a T1 school that could well have gotten her a job in the market she was looking for.

Oh, and I was advised to apply to a lower T1 and/or T2 school as a "safety" ???

If my school had one, I was never made aware of it.
