I too misread it.  I thought Lexy had misspelled "tidals" as in "tidal waves" and I thought she was wondering about if people who get caught up in tidal waves due to hurricanes are afforded URM status because they've lost everything.  Naturally, as I spend most of my free time contemplating the same thing, I was interested to see what she had to say about the matter.  I mean, there've been a lot of hurricanes recently, thus more tidals, and that would mean that if they are URM, it's going to be a tougher applicant pool than normal.

No such luck.  Just boring old titles.

yeah, i wouldn't call a professor a doctor.  i would just go with professor, but, like draino indicated, you can get fancy and write "visiting adjunct professor" or some *&^% like that.

My undergraduate advisor was a professor but apparently only liked to be called Dr. <name here>.  I heard this from someone else and so always called her by Dr. lest I get on her bad side.

What someone likes to be called, and how they should be addressed in business format are two different things.  My research advisor, who went by first name with undergrads and would mock you if you ever called him even "Dr." came down hard on me once for referring to him as Dr. Jack *&^% in a cover letter once...in that format he should be called Professor Jack *&^% so that reference to him carries the full weight for my benefit.

I'm 99% sure the "title" is in reference to actual job title, not Mr., Ms etc...

If it were job title, wouldn't they ask for position?  When you're filling out forms and such, title refers to the Mr./Mrs./Ms./Dr./etc. that comes before the name.

Sure, why not?    Could you leave it for your recommenders to fill out?  That way it's their mistake if they do it incorrectly

no, it's on the app itself. im sure it's no big, though. not worth a whole thread, i just wanted to see if i had gotten it blatantly wrong and everyone would go "no lexy you moron, it clearly means ___."

To be honest, I'm not really sure what is meant by "title", but I know that one the rec. forms I see on college applications and the ones I saw on grad. student applications, most of the people were putting professional postions...maybe they were all mistaken, now that I think about it...who knows.

I taught one class at this wierd school this summer and my OFFICIAL title was:

"Adjunct Visiting Assistant Professor of Chemistry"

I haven't had any interesting job titles.  Right now I'm a "Legal Assistant."  Before that, I was a "Peer Academic Advisor."  Before that, I had no title other than intern, so I write "Summer Research Associate" on my resume.  Before that, I was a "Student Assistant III."  Which is totally nondescriptive.  And before that, I don't know my official job title, but I was a waitress and I made pizza (not at the same place).  And there you have my entire life's work history
