I got this e-mail today:

Wish you were here!

At Minnesota!

Dear _____,

The University Of Minnesota Law School is one of the country’s elite law schools.  The U of MN offers a comprehensive legal education to train leaders in the legal profession for the challenges of the future.

We offer:

19 live client legal clinics

8 semester study abroad programs

Summer comparative law program in China

8th largest law library with over 1 million volumes

13:1 student/faculty ratio

10 research institutes

7 academic journals

99% employment rate

99% bar passage rate

Apply today and we will waive our application deadline.  Just include a copy of this email with your application.  Our class is not yet filled and the entirety of your application will be fully considered.

I know I do not stand a chance there and am not going to apply, but I wondered if they are trying to entice more people to apply because applications are down and they want to keep their selectivity rating intact?

Or do these kinds of e-mails go out every cycle, even from pretty highly ranked schools? I wouldn't think they would have to do an ad campaign like that.

Thanks!  :)

Sure sounds to me like applications are down and they're trying to increase their selectivity. Especially if they only sent it to people with index numbers below what they usually accept (no offense meant, of course).

Yeah, that's what I was thinking.  There's no way I could get in, so they must just be trying to reject more people to make their selectivity numbers look better. That's just kind of messed up.

But I will not be their pawn!  8)

I like this theory though; I like anything that bolsters the idea that applications are down this cycle.

I would reply and say you will apply if they waive your app fee. I'm curious to see what happens. :)

Do you have any evidence to back that up or is it just conjecture?

The letter already says the fee is waived.

That looks like data from the 2005-2006 cycle.  Hopefully, it stands true for 2007-2008 as well!  Less applicants and more acceptances sounds good to me.
