Law School Deferral
« on: February 12, 2007, 12:39:06 PM »
Hi!

I am really happy that I got accepted into a few schools for this Fall but unfortunately I need to request a one year deferral. I am due to give birth in late March or early April. The baby was not planned but a great surprise. I don't want to sacrifice my grades or sacrifice being a good mom. This is my first baby so I really don't know what to expect. I definitely want to go to law school. Any ideas on what I should say in the letter?

Thanks!

Yanetsy

I would say be candid, honest, and straightforward.  It isn't an unreasonable request, and you're talking to reasonable people many of whom have families themselves.  It seems like one year deferrals are not a big deal, especially when it comes to a legitimate life-cycle event such as childbirth.

I can't imagine that they would give you a problem, so just tell them exactly what's up.
