Visiting a School after Deferral.
« on: January 18, 2007, 05:55:57 PM »
I was deferred at Cornell :'(

They are my top choice, even though they are a bit of a long shot.

However, the deferral, as opposed to a straight out rejection gives me a little bit of hope.

I have been thinking I may go up and visit... my question is, what do I say once I am there?

I want them to know I took the long trek to visit them, which I hope will show them how dedicated to their school I am.

Also, has anyone had luck showing up and getting a meeting with an adcom...I am hoping my super personality will shine through in person.. ok not really... but I hope it would help me in some way to speak with someone.

Thanks

Their admissions personnel is really nice. I would shoot them an email before you visit, request a meeting/interview as well as a tour. Good luck. You'll love it at Cornell, we finally got snow last week.

first off, deferred is pretty far from rejection ... and it is not in any way a waitlist.  This is an odd admissions year, many schools are using the deferr to just hold off on decisions until they see how their whole pool shapes up.  Keep your chin up!  A dude just got in today with a 166 and I am fairly sure they only applied in December (ok, sure, dude had a 4.0, but whatevs).

Second, visiting could be a great idea.  I don't think you have to ask if anyone had any "luck" meeting with someone ... its called an informational interview and it will generally be with an admissions staffer.  Once you are there you ask questions.  Lots of em.  Not dumb ones, but questions that show how interested you are in the school and that you haev done some research and want to know more.
Good luck.

Maybe not, but it'll at least make you feel satiated and make you look like a local.
