deferral?

Ok, maybe this is a stupid question, but anyways: what exactly is a deferral?  Does that mean automatic acceptance next year?

it depends in what context. If you're deferred (held) over from Early Decision/Early Action then it means you're going to be evaluated with regular applicants. If it's in the context of a year's deferral, then you've got it. You basically get accepted, ask to be deferred until the next year, and you start a year later without having to reapply or anything. Some schools are more lienent about granting deferrals than others.

And then some schools, like Notre Dame (i think), give offers of admission based on a year's deferral.
