This whole thing is bigger than many people thought, you did not even have to invest directly with him to get screwed.

i'm surprised at how slowly the effects are being realized.

I'm not surprised that fund managers are slow to tell people that they were taking fees for putting huge chunks of [people's] investments directly to someone else's rather undocumented fund, frankly.

EDIT as indicated
That's cool how you referenced a case.

I mean, I think it can be forever, and that would be really awesome. It just kind of drives me crazy when people break up or whatever, or a friendship ends, and people say "oh, s/he must never have really loved me/you."

But this is always the case, Cathy.

I feel like I missed important pieces of Miss P's story, and would like to be filled in.

David Cook is delish.

Sorry, Matthies.  I don't do well with numbers so I just keep my money in my mattress/cookie jar.  Feel free to borrow that investment strategy for yourself.

yes but fund managers are not the only players involved.

No, but it only takes one interested group (and a lack of effective enforcement) to keep the information from flowing in a way that would reveal the "full extent" of the problem, right?  Also, rich people are in serious denial about what's happened to their investments in general.  They may not be prepared to confront actual numbers, etc.

Sax, you did miss a story, but I don't know if it's one that I would tell on the LAW SCHOOL DISCUSSION board while sober.  You may have to wait a few minutes.

No, jk, a few hours.  See you later, boys.

I'm sick

In related news, dry heaving is worse than actual vomiting, I've decided.

I just thought to go see Milk in [origin].  Of course, it is not playing anywhere there.

I've got to say, seeing it at the Castro theater with a sold-out crowd was unbeatable.

I definitely agree that that sentiment is absurd, even if enduring love is pretty cool stuff.

ION, this foundation that once funded part of my salary (in addition to much more important things) is closing because of Madoff.  Assuming you had plenty of money and you had gotten too-good-to-be-true returns from a Madoff investment (and withdrawn), would you feel a moral obligation to donate to the non-profits affected by Madoff's scheme?  I know forensic accounting can get complicated, but I imagine you could figure out, essentially, how much you put in, how much you withdrew, what similar (legit) funds would have yielded at the time, etc.

My parents and I are going to see Milk on Christmas!  Too bad you're not going to be primarily geographically deceptively misdescriptive!

My friend's org (that I think you might also have some sort of connection to but I could be misremembering/making it up) is also getting screwed by the Madoff stuff! I cannot believe how messed up this all is.  >:( :-\

I'm sorry, Matthies.  That's awful.   :-\

2d  :-\

So I suppose I should just read one of the articles or something, but why did he end up getting caught now, if this has been going on so long?

ETA: He turned himself in? Bizarre!

I've been staring at the vein pulsing in my ankle for the past 5 minutes.

Also, I maybe take back that thing about the dry heaving.

I haven't done any Christmas shopping yet of any kind. Whoops. I guess I should try to do some today....
