I first try to get through my unreads.  I usually work my way up from the bottom, because the ones on top seem likely to be most active, and I figure I can dispose of the ones at the bottom without having to return.  I do about three tabs at a time, clicking through them, closing them, and then opening new ones.  There is also usually a separate tab open for PMs.  

If I have the idea that something major is happening in a thread in which I have not previously posted, I check last 200.  I also use last 200 on the rare occasions that I make it through my unreads.

I always do unread replies to my posts, and if I get bored with that I will do all unreads.  Last 200 topics?  I don't click on that; it's scary.

i usually use unread replies,
especially if i'm in the middle of a discussion that is limited to one word at a time, questions, etc. so i can maintain a good flow like a 'normal' conversation.  i have to keep my typing skills up to speed in order to beat cal and gcoop to the punch.

if there aren't any pressing unread replies, i check unread posts once in a while to see if a new thread came up that requires my immediate attention.

i hope you don't really think that people here are obnoxious/snobby/annoying for the most part.  actually i've found that the regular posters (e.g. J.  yes, really) are for the most part friendly, helpful people.

I'd say something similar, but I would replace "e.g." with "except."
