How much does an alumni recommendation help?
« on: December 29, 2006, 04:52:25 PM »
Do schools really care if their alumni recommended you?  I asked some alumni I knew (2 family friends and one former boss) to write me a recommendation to the school they went to because I thought it might help a little.  Does it help in any way?  If so, how much?

Family friends are generally frowned upon regardless of alumni connection.  The only situation where an alumni recommendation will definitely help is if they still have a strong connection to the school, generally in the form of making big donations.  Otherwise and alumni recommendation from a former boss will help as long as you are in the schools numbers range - the school isn't going to throw off their medians bc an alumni recommended you.
