Possibly.  I was under the impression that, in a situation like this, "exclusive" tells the reader that nothing else outside the dichotomy matters, while "mutually exclusive" tells the reader that only one option can be valid and/or true, but not both simultaneously.

Besides, there are dichotomies that aren't mutually exclusive.

I thought dichotomy just meant two options usually viewed as opposites on a linear spectrum.

Really?  I felt wicked smart.  I pieced together the Thompson argument all by myself when I was that age.

In retrospect, I probably felt intelligent because I was actually ignorant. 

It was still a nice feeling, though.
