I know what it means, but does anyone know what they are looking for? Can you just have your recommender plug in the schools name in the letter or do they want the recommender to directly addres something about the school? I'm a little confused.

Happy holidays everyone!

I think it's most likely for situations where you've got a recommender with a personal connection to the school.  So not a mail merge, but say ... an alumnus, or a professor from the school itself, or someone who can speak to not only you, but why you would be a good fit at X.

Yeah I think it would be for two situations
1) personal connection

2) if a school has a specific program ... say in middle eastern comparative law ... and this prof. has been teaching you arabic and supervised some research or something.  Sometimes it can be a third letter, in addition to your two general letters, that you wouldn't want to send to every school.
