I was just wondering if anyone had an opinion on the transition from a predominately white state school to a HBCU. I'm African-American and I attended a white majority state school, was in a predominately white fraternity (as recruitment chairman, I changed that!) and I was nervous about potentially moving to a HBCU. I'm more nervous about the different environment and how it would affect me, nothing wrong with it...just curiousanyone have the same experiences?
may think he's one of the only blacks that grew up the way he did.. i'm more curious about why he chose to join a white fraternity when there were black fraternities on his campus to be honest...
Does it make a difference? Maybe the black fraternities didnt have what he was looking for. IMO it would not have made a difference because the impact that the fraternities has depends on the school. For example, in my school the historically black fraternities were more interested in who could throw the best parties as opposed to voter registration and mentoring up and coming black students. Maybe he joined a fraternity that better met his needs. However, I am also interested in why he feels nervous about being in a mostly black environment. maybe he's nervous that he will get a lower quality education.
