Please.  Nobody does that, and I haven't advocated that.  Utilitarianism is useful from a policymaking viewpoint.  As a policymaker, the question is whether jailing this person enhances overall utility.  For individuals, self-interest usually trumps all, and viewing this from the perspective of the assailant, he would have been better off keeping his mouth shut.  You're conflating two different perspectives and two different arguments.

if you totally misconstrue what I say, yes.  I've never argued for utilitarianism as a guiding philosophy for personal decisions.  Find where I have said otherwise.  You won't.  I mention it only in the context of policymaking.

you completely misconstrue what you say--which is generally why after 5 pages you've agreed with 95% of what the other person has been arguing in the first place.   :D.

edit: acting in self-interest and for the overall utlity, I'm not going to clog this thread by pasting all your nonsense

No, the other person generally ends up agreeing with my sound reasoning 8)

And no pasting is a cop-out.  Don't attack without support.

No, they really don't.  You co-opt what the other person has been arguing and say you agree.

"And no pasting is a cop-out."
