Based strictly on the numbers used by USNWR, a 180/3.61 is no more beneficial to UMich than a 171/3.61 (assuming they are not aiming for an improbable quantum leap of 2 points on their 75%), and is actually less beneficial than a 171/3.62.  The advantage of that superlative LSAT is greatest at schools with the highest 75% LSAT, like Columbia and Harvard.  Michigan's response to applicants with 172+ would, I'd guess, give us some insight into how they regard the LSAT as a predictor of LS success when USNWR isn't holding a gun to their heads, so maybe they don't put much stock in it.

Is this theory designed solely to console myself on my own waitlisting?  Probably.  Anyway, bummer Inspector.

I agree, and I think this is why I tend to get into more schools than people with lower LSATs and higher GPAs, but I get tend to get less money than they do at the schools we both get into.  Like the schools are confident I would do fine, so they let me in, but they don't feel the need to woo me as much, because I only help them with one number and not two.
