Do you think if I had gone to a party dressed as a suicide bomber reciting the Koran and pointing guns at people, it would have been ok? If not, why? Am I unable to make the joke about this stereotype and phobia in our society? Why?

I agree it's not news (I only meant news like . . . it's in the paper news). Lot's of things in the paper have about zero significance to anyone, but they still get reported.

I'm going to go ahead and assume that you're a white male.

You going to a party dressed as a suicide bomber would be the equivalent of you showing up in blackface.

An Arab student going to a party dressed as suicide bomber would be the equivalent of an African-American showing up dressed as a #%@!-ish character, or some similar caricature.

Earlier, people were saying that this was a joke meant to highlight a stereotype and fear in our society. Why does my skin color prevent me from being able to make that joke?

It doesn't.  Your actions are just interpreted as racist by a lot of people.

See: approximately 200,000 conversations on Chris Rock.

bandaid -- look up 'satire' and then come back and we'll discuss it some more. There a level of conversation below which even this board can't go.
